I can honestly say I didn’t know who the hell Don Imus was before last week. I never listened to his show. He has been fired for some rude comments he directed towards members of a women’s basketball team. I agree that his comments were racist and uncalled for. However, I don’t understand why the media has made such a big deal about this. Some bigoted old white guy is babbling hate speech. OK. Is that anything new? I’m not going to listen to or support him. I’ve done my part.
I really doubt that he has been fired because of the backlash of his own listeners. If so, ok…But hasn’t he really been fired because the media hasn’t shut up about it since they first heard the remarks…and the network doesn’t like the bad publicity…so they have fired him in hopes that they don’t lose any more money from sponsors because of their “bad image”.
Recently Ohio had an issue on the ballot about banning smoking in all bars and clubs within the state. It passed. I’m not a smoker. And I no longer drink. Should I even get a say in the rights of those that choose to spend their time in bars and clubs? I voted no because I believe that the business owners have the right to run their establishment how they choose to. However, all those people who don’t even go to bars and clubs, voted yes…taking away the rights of others.
I do have a point with this….was Don Imus fired fairly? Let his listeners decide. If they want to continue to listen to him…ok. They have that right. I guess what I’m ultimately trying to say is…I don’t want to go to Don Imus’s bar. But I don’t give a shit if other people do.
