I’m in training again this week at work. This time for SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and Reporting Services (SSRS). The analysis services has been first, and it’s been a little dry. What annoys me about this training is that there are various labs we have to perform. Normally I would like this hands-on approach better than straight lecture. But what happens is that you get lost in the step-by-step procedures involved in the lab, and you start to lose the big picture of what you are ultimately trying to do. Then ocassionally there is a group project, that is completely open-ended that you have to figure out all on your own. That’s great…except for the fact that you were a big mindless zombie during the labs and didn’t absorb enough info to do the group project very easily. I guess that’s better than not learning anything.
Anyhow. All in all, I’m liking the new Analysis Services. We haven’t gotten into any of the advanced/new features like being able to build KPI’s right into the cube. Should be interesting, and useful to do some of the Scorecarding/Performance Point stuff we may do in future projects.
